Street space accounts for around a quarter of the total area in cities. In Vienna, public parking spaces alone take up an area equivalent to the districts of Neubau, Josefstadt and Innere Stadt. The street is therefore not only the site of the mobility transition, but also a vital spatial resource for climate adaptation. Spread across the entire city, streets have the potential to create green space justice and quality of life for all citizens. The ecological and social significance of transforming streets into multifunctional public spaces has been proven both scientifically and through innovative planning practice. Impressive projects have emerged in many cities that lead the way towards transformation. After all, we need to speed things up – the climate crisis leaves us no other choice.

How do we move from scientific and planning evidence to a policy of action? What political and planning tools are available to accelerate the transformation of our streets? What strategies create scope for political action? How do we make our cities climate-resilient for everyone?
