School of Walking: Freie Mitte, wilder Lebensraum

Promises imbedded in the language mit Lina Streeruwitz und Michael Klein Freie Mitte, wilder Lebensraum

The School of Walking sheds light on the investments of citizens, democratic questions and questions of the law. The artists Bik Van der Pol (NL) invite the architects and urbanists Lina Streeruwitz and Michael Klein to lead a walk to a site that speaks back to these urgencies, taking into account promises imbedded in the language. The walk leads us to the public park »Freie Mitte« as part of the masterplan for the urban development area »Nordbahnhof« by the Austrian architectural practice StudioVlayStreeruwitz.

At the large post-industrial site close to the historic center of Vienna, Austria, Lina Streeruwitz demonstrates the possibility of rethinking nature. Rather than ‘tidying up’ the site, the project tries to preserve the untamed habitat, allowing the ecological wilderness to take centre stage as the common public space and heart of the new neighborhood. The walk with Lina Streeruwitz and Michael Klein discusses necessities, possibilities and responsibilities of architectural planning in the face of climate crisis, taking into account the promises imbedded in »Freie Mitte«.
